As you travel down your healing path, your environment has a significant impact on your mental health, mood, and emotional well-being. This includes how you cultivate your physical space (e.g. the lighting, how you arrange your physical space, etc), but it also includes the people you interact with on a day-to-day basis and include in your innermost circle.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll be sharing about the importance of cultivating your ‘inner circle’ to support and enhance your healing journey.
Why your ‘inner circle’ matters
As Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
When you are in the process of healing, this becomes an even more vital part of your journey.
Consider this for a moment – if you are living in a polluted environment, how will that impact your health? I’m not just talking about your physical health, I’m also talking about your mental, emotional, and spiritual health as well.
If your environment is polluted, it will likely take up a lot of your mental energy. You may find yourself distracted by the idea of needing to clean up the environment, even if it’s in the back of your mind. Your body might feel sluggish or reactive to the toxins in the environment. Eventually, this stress will take a toll on your emotional bandwidth and spiritual well-being.
When someone is on a healing journey, they have the choice to clean up their internal and external environment from any place where it has become polluted with non-supportive energy that’s impacting their overall health and well-being.
As I recently shared on the Breast Cancer Conquerors podcast, a healing crisis provides us with an opportunity to heal on a deeper level if we choose to see it that way. When given any type of diagnosis, you have the opportunity to reassess your inner circle who will enhance your healing by adding supportive energy to your environment.
Let’s talk about identifying your ‘inner circle’ before beginning treatment.
Cultivating an external environment for healing that includes an inner circle of people that feel life-giving as opposed to life-draining is a critical step along your healing journey.
I encourage my clients to identify an inner circle of friends and family that will become their ‘support team’ before beginning any kind of treatment. This circle can include supportive friends or family members that are non-judgmental and will lift you up when you’re feeling down. People who will show up for you when you need them the most.
You don’t need a large group of people, in fact, this may be just one or two people that you can have in your corner through the process. A pet or a therapist can also serve as great additions to this list since they can listen non-judgmentally and bring a sense of safety and consistency in your life.
It is important to identify these people before treatment so that you don’t have to waste precious mental or emotional energy as treatment begins. Identifying and sharing that these people are a part of your inner circle before beginning treatment can alleviate stress and anxiety. One thing to remember is that your tribe wants to support you! Letting them know you consider them an important support for you will make them feel valued and help them show up for you when you need them most.
Being cognizant of the family members, friends, or others in your environment that tend to increase stress and anxiety is equally as important as knowing who helps to decrease those feelings. Setting appropriate boundaries and expectations of what will support you most throughout your healing process can enhance your journey.
Here are three questions to ask yourself when cultivating your inner circle list:
- Who are the people in my life who lift me up and are always there when I need them?
- Who can I talk to without judgment, without needing to defend my position or decisions?
- Who will make me laugh or provide me with fun distractions when I’m feeling down?
Give yourself time and space to really contemplate the answers to these questions. I’ll be back here on Thursday sharing about the importance of curating your home environment for healing.
Much Love,
Dr. Katie
