We've all been there – dealing with an illness or injury that just doesn't seem to want to get better no matter what we try. The constant pain, fatigue, and frustration can take such a mental toll.

What if I told you that part of the solution lies in reprogramming your mind?

I recently interviewed Board Certified Hypnotist, Penny Chiasson for the Born to Heal Podcast. You may not realize it, but your subconscious mind is incredibly powerful when it comes to influencing your physical state.

It processes over 11 million bits of information per second, compared to only 40 to 50  bits for your conscious mind. This subconscious processing impacts everything from your emotions and memories to the biological factors that govern healing.

The critical factor? Your fundamental beliefs about yourself and your situation.

The Identity Shift

If you repeatedly think or say “I am sick” or “I am dying,” you reinforce an identity aligned with illness and fear. And unfortunately, this negative self-perception activates the fear centers in your brain, triggering a stress response that undermines your body's ability to heal itself.

But what if you could shift your identity to something more empowering?

Imagine reframing your inner monologue:

“I am living fully in this moment.”

“I am discovering joy in the smallest things.”

“I am a radiant beacon of peace and healing.”

By upgrading your self-identity in this way, you minimize fear and create the inner conditions for your body's natural healing capacity to thrive.

How to Make the Shift

Changing deep-rooted beliefs is not necessarily easy, but it is possible with practice. One powerful technique is to craft “I am” statements that align with your desires, then engage your emotions by really feeling the energy behind each statement as you read them aloud.

For example:

“I am vibrantly healthy and alive.”

Take a deep breath and visualize yourself glowing with vitality as you say this. Let it fill you up.

You can also leverage your sensations by associating a physical anchor like pinching your thumb and finger with the relaxation response from deep breathing. This conditions your mind to relax on demand with that simple trigger.

The Amazing Breath

Speaking of which, let's talk about that breathing technique. By inhaling deeply into your abdomen for a count of three, holding for three, and then slowly exhaling for three, you stimulate the vagus nerve. This nerve is connected to regulating blood pressure and heart rate, and releasing anti-stress hormones like serotonin and endorphins.

Spend just one minute every hour or two practicing this belly breathing while pinching your thumb and finger, and within a day or two your body will start to associate that hand posture with instant relaxation and healing.

You have more power over your body's healing ability than you may realize. By tapping into your subconscious through resonant self-talk, empowering beliefs, and mind-body practices, you can minimize fear and create the inner sanctuary where healing can flourish.
