What if illness, chronic pain, or cancer are ancient survival strategies your body uses to protect you?
This week, I had a thought-provoking guest, Dr. Melissa Sell, on the podcast. She is an advocate of German New Medicine (GNM) and offers a transformative perspective on health that challenges conventional medical wisdom.
In this episode, she takes us through the five biological laws of GNM, which propose that diseases, including cancers, are not just physical anomalies but meaningful biological responses to emotional shocks and traumas.
🌟Be sure to scroll down beneath today’s podcast episode where I give you a full breakdown of the 5 biological laws.
Dr. Sell offers a holistic approach to health that honors the intelligence of the human body. One of the most fascinating aspects discussed is the idea that our body uses illness as a language, a way to communicate internal conflicts and start the process of healing.
You'll walk away knowing the specific emotional shocks linked to different types of ailments. You'll shift how you view your body's reactions to stress and emotional pain.
If you're curious about the deeper meanings behind illness, seeking alternatives to traditional treatment, or simply aiming to live a healthier life, this episode is a must-listen.
Open your mind to possibilities that could not only change how you tackle health challenges but also how you perceive your body's incredible ability to heal and thrive.

Overview of the 5 Biological Laws
Today’s episode was loaded with so much information that I decided to create a summary of Dr. Hamer’s 5 biological laws below. According to Dr. Hamer, these 5 biological laws are consistent across humans, animals, and nature and can help us to reconceptualize what ‘disease’ is and isn’t.
1. Psyche Brain Organ Connection – The IRON RULE OF CANCER
According to the first biological law, the Psyche-Brain-Organ connection, when your body perceives a shock or threat in your environment, at lightning speed, your psyche, brain, and organs adapt to ‘survive’ that shock.
The reactions in these three areas happen all at once.
As soon as the psyche perceives the shock, this could be something as simple as a family member criticizing you or it could be as catastrophic as an accident, your body activates a specific program. That program impacts the brain in a specific region, signaling a specific organ in the body to change and adapt. This is a ‘protective’ program that the body runs to survive the shock.
Dr. Melissa shared that Dr. Hamer’s body ran a specific biological program when his son died suddenly (the shock in his psyche) that signaled the area of his brain to send more energy to his testicles (the organ). The survival purpose of this biological program is to signal his body to procreate because he lost his child. This resulted in an overgrowth of cells in that region that doctors would call ‘testicular cancer.’
This biological law is called ‘the Iron Rule of Cancer’ because it invites us to see cancer as a special adaption the body runs for survival vs seeing it as a ‘dis-ease.’
2. The Law of Two Phases
The Law of Two Phases suggests that there are actually two phases of healing – the Conflict Active Phase and the Healing Phase.
The Conflict Active Phase is the phase the body goes into right after the shock. The body is in more of a sympathetic response (think fight, flight, freeze, fawn). In the Conflict Active Phase, you may find that your mind is racing, you are anxious, and your hands and feet are cold. Your tissues are adapting based on the biological program your body is running in response to the shock for your survival. Your body is either sending more energy to the location or breaking down tissues in a specific area of the body depending on what biological program is being run.
Once the biological conflict has been resolved, then your body moves into a more parasympathetic response (you can think of this as rest and digest). This is when the body starts to heal and repair what happened in the body during the Conflict Active Phase. Healing happens in a fluid environment so you might see swelling, night sweats, mucus, and other symptoms that many people consider to be symptoms of disease or illness. According to German New Medicine, this is the body trying to heal itself.
3. Tissue Distinctions
Tissue distinctions essentially say that depending upon the area of the brain that is affected, different tissues will have different reactions.
Pons and Brainstem (oldest region of the brain): Reactions in these regions will affect the reproductive system and digestive systems. The shock in the psyche that triggers these regions typically has to do with self-esteem issues and ‘morsel’ issues such as not being able to stomach something you’ve heard or seen.
Cerebellum (the old mesoderm): Reactions in these regions will affect the deeper layers of your skin and pleura. The shock in the psyche that triggers these regions typically has to do with feeling dirty, attacked, or defiled in some way.
Cerebral Medulla (the new mesoderm): Reactions in these regions will affect the connective tissue in your body. The shock in the psyche that triggers these regions typically has to do with not feeling good enough or capable enough.
Ectoderm: Reactions in these regions will affect the outer skin such as the lining of the mouth, vagina, and ducts with epithelia (such as the urethra). The shock in the psyche that triggers these regions typically has to do with social and sexual interactions that spark territorial issues.
Dr. Melissa also shared that conflicts that involve feeling abandoned, isolated, or alienated can lead to retaining water and increased swelling.
4. The Ontogenetic System of Microbes
This biological law states that microbes are not the problem, they are instead seen as a part of the healing process. Dr. Hamer described that bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes assist in the breakdown process of the tissues that were built up during the Conflict Active Phase of the biological program.
5. The Quintessential Biological Special Programs
Nothing in nature is meaningless, malignant, or diseased. The body only does what makes sense to survive and reproduce. Our intelligent bodies have intentional tissue changes that happen in response to our subjective human experience to keep us safe and protected.
In Closing
My goal in sharing different schools of thought like German New Medicine is to broaden our perspective on how the body works. What I hope you can see from today’s episode is that your body hasn’t failed you… in fact, it is amazing. It is always trying to protect you and support you – even when it doesn’t seem like it. We’ve learned to see the symptoms in our bodies as a negative thing, but what if we’ve been misinterpreting our body’s signals all along?
