3 Steps to navigate health decisions

Good morning, Conscious Healers,

What a week it has been! We’ve been diving into the foundations of optimizing your health and well-being through the Born to Heal Podcast and the Roadmap to Radiant Health workshop.

While I’ve shared recommendations on how to create positive changes in your health to stay up the river from disease and illness, I know it is easy to get caught in indecision and feel overwhelmed with where to begin.

After supporting thousands of patients through the decision-making process throughout my career, I’ve identified three important steps to support you in making the most informed decisions about your health.

Because while you can read and learn information all day long, ultimately your decisions around your health rest in your hands.

So, while you’re in the information-gathering stage, here are three steps you can take to help you make the best decisions for yourself:

  1. Calm your nervous system- Has anyone ever said, ‘Take a deep breath and calm down’ to you when you’re navigating tough choices? While I know this can feel frustrating to hear in the moment, there is validity to it. When you feel fearful or worried, your body is in a sympathetic state, limiting your brain’s capacity to make an informed decision. 

    When you’re in a stressed state, your brain perceives that there are fewer options to choose from and will rush to decide to get away from the perceived threat.

     

    When making a decision, you want to instead choose from a grounded, calm place. So, before you start the decision-making process, do your best to get calm. Take a few deep breaths, put your feet on the earth, or snuggle up to your pet or loved ones. This can help to regulate the nervous system and get your whole brain back online for the decision-making process.

     

  2. Weigh the risks vs benefits- No matter if you’re deciding on a traditional treatment, an alternative therapy modality, or a device to install in your home, it’s important to weigh the risks versus benefits. If there are side effects associated with the choice you’re making, you’ll want to consider those too. 

    You can ask yourself if the benefits outweigh the risks or vice versa. Remember, everyone’s perception of risk versus benefit is different so it’s important to get clear on what’s most important to you on your treatment journey.

     

  3. Consider your values and goals- Everyone has different values and goals as it relates to their treatment outcomes. Before you make your ultimate decision, get clear on what your goals and values are. 

    Your family members, friends, and treatment team may have different values and goals for you than you have, and that’s ok! We’re all entitled to our own opinion – but ultimately you are the one in charge of making your own decisions.

    Getting clear on what’s most important to you in your treatment process will help you to stay grounded and connected to your inner compass as you move through the process.

And remember the age-old adage: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Rushing and trying to make too many changes at one time can also create stress and overwhelm. So when approaching your health, if possible, change one thing at a time.

While it may seem like making one decision at a time will slow you down, it will actually do the opposite. Making one change at a time reduces overwhelm and supports you in knowing if the one thing you’re doing is making a difference or not.

Once you’ve implemented and stabilized that change, you can move on to making your next shift.
