Today, I want to talk to you about why a positive mindset alone doesn’t work when going through cancer treatment.
Have you ever attempted to keep a positive mindset or act like you have it all together when, on the inside, you feel scared, frustrated, terrified, or alone?
Maybe when you received a cancer diagnosis, you tried your hardest to override fear with thoughts such as, “I’m going to be healthy; I’m going to overcome this!” but the feelings of fear returned.
As human beings, our minds and our emotions are separate yet intertwined. Keeping a positive mindset is essential. However, it won’t override the emotions we’re experiencing inside.
That’s why keeping it ‘high vibe’ and telling yourself to ‘just think positive’ doesn’t work for most people. When attempting to keep it ‘high vibe,’ most people don’t feel that way at all inside. Being in their presence, they may feel manic or ungrounded. This is because the emotions hiding beneath the surface don’t match the ‘high vibe’ mentality, putting them into a state of fight or flight.
What might seem like a positive mindset on the outside may be covering up uncomfortable or upsetting feelings on the inside.
I’m not saying that keeping a positive mindset isn’t essential. I’m saying quite the opposite. A positive attitude is important, but we need to learn how to calm the nervous system and bring our emotions to a state of neutrality, acceptance, and peace at the same time.
When we can access a positive mindset AND come to a state of internal peace by regulating our emotions, we are priming the body for healing. In this case, our minds and emotions working in tandem create an optimal internal environment for healing. The nervous system relaxes, and the body can go into a state of rest, digestion, and healing.
This is called becoming more ‘emotionally fluent,’ which is the ability to identify, feel, process, and communicate our emotions. As we increase our emotional fluency, greater peace, calmness, acceptance, and neutrality result.
You may think, “Dr. Deming, this is all great and well, but how do I do it? How do I access peace and make those ungrounded or upsetting feelings disappear?”
When I am supporting someone through their cancer recovery, we go beyond just killing the physical cancer cells to get to the root of the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects that contribute to cancer. We focus on emotions and clearing emotional trauma from the body, ultimately giving access to those feelings of peace, neutrality, and acceptance.
Below, I’m sharing my favorite techniques to address and heal emotional trauma that I use with those recovering from cancer in my practice.
These are my three preferred techniques to release and process emotions and what each method offers:
𝟏. PSYCH-K
– Releasing past traumas
– Processing current emotions (emotional fluency)
– Reprogramming the subconscious mind with more empowering beliefs
𝟐. EFT Tapping
– Releasing old, outdated subconscious programming
– Healing past trauma or suppressed emotions
𝟑. Emotion Code
– Releasing old trauma or suppressed emotions.
Of course, you can always use traditional therapy, which has been used for a long time. I recommend these three techniques because they are quick and effective, bringing you inner peace without rehashing the past.
